Innovation at work place

All organization expect innovation from their employees at work place. Are they able to innovate something apart from their work for which they have been hired?

Almost employees think that they are not Dr C.V Raman, Sir Vinod Dham, Sir Albert Einstein or Sir Issac Newton, so how they can innovate? So that means a normal employee is not able to innovate something? In today's era when there are a lot of things have already been discovered or innovated means there is no scope of innovation by a normal people or employee?

My answer to this question is NO. A normal employee can also innovate at work place. To understand this we need to understand first what is the meaning of innovation in today's environment.

Innovation always does't means discover something from scratch like innovate a light bulb which was innovated by Adison. We can also innovate by combining or using some individual components which has already been discovered or innovated by others like facebook can be an example. It has used the already innovated computer languages, database etc.

So how an employee can innovate at work place? First we should think or collect all activities we do as part of our normal life activities like we go to office engage our self in assigned tasks, complete the task come to home and engage to our daily life activities and forget about what we did in office today. If we try to remember the activities we do daily in office we found that there are some activities who belongs to a pattern means they are repetitive tasks. Some of them we will have to do and we can not think about automate them like make a small script or program to do this task but some of them can be automated. If you able to identify some task means you have got some initial point from where we can start thinking about innovation. This example doesn't means that only those people who are doing technical task a can innovate. Any human being who is a living entity on this earth can think about innovation. So managers can think some innovative idea about productivity, employee relation ship etc.

So after identifying the innovation point next step is implementation of the idea. Most of people do hard work at their work place or they are involved deeply so they don't have time to implement their innovative idea and most of time their idea died before implementation. The remedy to this problem is whenever you get an innovative idea start discussing with other people. Most of the people hesitate to discuss with others because they think other people can kidding with him but don't think what others will think about you. The biggest benefit of discussing your idea with others is that, you shall not forget your idea and people will try to give you suggestions about modification/addition to your idea and will help us to clarify our ideas so we can see a clear picture about our idea and it also keep us motivated towards our goal. Sometimes it also keeps pressure on us to proceed our thinking and come up with some existing implementation of our innovate idea. When we get a clear picture about your idea we should start implementing them and ask feedback from other people or colleagues. Their intermediate feedback gives us a chance to rectify issues at early stage. We should start from easy task and after implementation start using them at early stage instead of waiting to finish it completely. Using the implemented idea from early stages gives us the chance to test and enhance the functionality and it gives us motivation and good feeling to proceed further.

After implementing our idea only for our requirement we should start thinking about how we can generalize this so by doing some small modifications other people can use this. Our idea should be usable by other people also.

Advertisement of our innovation is very important because it we are not able to advertise and encourage more and more to use it is not worth to innovate something. So we can write blogs,presentation, ask colleagues to use it and mouth publicity at work place.

Most of the people think why they should do some other task apart from their job? Company is not going to pay him for their innovation so why they should waste their time or spent some extra time from their normal life. The answer to this question is to think about the hidden benefits of innovation. Most of the time we do what we don't want and it increases frustration and frustration decrease our productivity at work place. So if we are doing some innovative task and we are also owner and free to implement using own style then it gives us pleasure of ownership and keep us motivated. If we are learning something extra to implement our idea then it also increases our learning cure and most of the time this learning help us in improving our daily tasks. So we can say we are learning by doing which is the most effective way to learning. Every activity we do in our life gives us a lesson and improve our learning and we can think like we are doing investment in our future.

Sometime people think about some idea and start implementing them and after they found that this has been innovated by others and they all the effort go waste. To avoid this situation as discussed before starting implementation we should discuss with others so if something is already existing then we can try to customized the existing implementation or enhance the existing system. We should not try to re-invent the wheel.

The biggest benefit of the innovation at work place is that it also motives other people and provide us a innovative workplace and increase our confidence level so we can become ready to take up new challenges without any hesitation.

So start innovating ....from today.....
